Datalane wants to help you keep spam
out of your inbox!
Tired of wading through all that junk mail? Learn how to stop the spammers -- here are instructions to automatically filter your e-mail.

How to configure Outlook Express to filter email that has been tagged as ***SPAM***

This Outlook Express message rule will throw the messages into a Spam Folder so you can review them, if you wish, before you delete them.
These instructions are for Outlook Express version 5 or 6. For version 4, click here.

First, Open Outlook Express.

1)
Click on Tools, then Message Rules, then Mail.

2) This will give you the New Mail Rule screen. If not, click the New button.

3) On the New Mail Rule screen, check the box beside "Where the Subject line contains specific words" and the box beside "Move it to the specified folder".

4) Next, click the blue link that says "contains specific words".

5) Type ***SPAM*** (this must be exact--it's 3 asterisks, the word SPAM, and 3 asterisks--with no spaces. Click Add, then OK.

6) Next, click the blue link that says "specified folder".

7) Next, click the New Folder button. Type Spam, then click OK. Then, click OK again.

8) Click OK and OK again and you're done!

If you had rather automatically delete messages marked as spam, substitute steps 7 & 8 with:

7) Click the Deleted Items folder. Click OK.

8) Click OK and OK again and you're done!

What is Datalane doing to fight SPAM?

Datalane is blocking some spam before it ever reaches your inbox.
We require mail senders to use proper mail communications, as outlined in the internet mail standards.
We require mail senders to use mail servers that are closed to spammers.

We refuse mail from verified spam sources (including spammers, spam gangs and spam support services).
We refuse mail when the subject contains obvious pornographic words and spam phrases.

The remaing mail is checked by a (imperfect) computer program that runs over 200 tests on each email message. If the email scores over a certain threshold, it is marked as ***SPAM*** so you can filter it to a separate folder if desired.

Why is Datalane fighting SPAM?

The Spam problem has gotten out of hand.
Spam is quickly turning your inbox into a mess of pornographic messages, unsolicited sales pitches, and anything but a means for personal communications. Spam has reached epidemic proportions, and is forcasted to get even worse. Unchecked, it makes your email address practically worthless and consumes tremendous amounts of your time sorting through and deleting spam messages.

I have other questions about SPAM.

How much does SPAM filtering cost?
Datalane is providing this as a free service to its customers.
I don't want anyone at Datalane reading my email!
No one at Datalane reads your email. Your email is processed automatically, around the clock, by computer programs that examine the contents and check it for spam characteristics.

How does Datalane decide that my email is SPAM?
No computer program, or person for that matter, can decide if someone else's email is SPAM. It can only check and see if the email has enough characteristics to be considered "possibly SPAM". It is not always correct, and you should skim through your spam folder and verify that the email is indeed SPAM.
I want spam!
If you want to continue to receive spam, let us know and we will give you an address that is not filtered.
